Geoffrey PROUD

View Artwork

Proud is one of Australias foremost living contemporary artists and has been awarded two of the nations most prestigisous art prizes - he Archibald and the Sulman Prizes. Born in Adelaide in 1946 he had his first solo exhibition at the age of sixteen and has since had over 80 solo exhibitions and 100 group exhibitions.

Painting primarily in pastels and oils, Proud uses bold colours and expressive mark-making to portray his subjects which include children and childhood narratives, flowers, still life and nudes. His imaginative paintings are quirky. Fantastical and often verging on the surreal, like fairy tales they depict a world of innocence with a sometimes ominous edge.

Amongst his awards, Proud won the prestigious Archibald Prize (1990) for his portrait of writer Dorothy Hewett and the Sulman Prize (1975). His work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, many state and regional gallery collections, Parliament collections in Canberra and Sydney, and in large private collections such as Elton John in London and the late Kerry Packer.

Geoffrey Proud has regularly exhibited in all states with over eighty solo exhibitions and over one hundred joint exhibitions.
