Şebnem Gencer

Sebnem Gencer is a contemporary artis born in Istanbul in 1988. In 2005, she graduated from Kadıköy Anatolian Vocational and Vocational High School, Art Department and in 2013 she graduated from the Art Department of the Art and Design Faculty of Dogus University. In 2009-2011 her talent saw her working as an assistant in the workshop of Devrim Erbil, acclaimed as one of the most important living representatives of Turkish contemporary art.

The artist then established her art studio in Istanbul where her urban works became quickly sought after. She has been opening artist in many exhibitions in Turkey and abroad and has participated in international art events. Gencer also worked with one of Istanbul’s most prestigious galleries for several years before relocating to Australia, initially Bronte Sydney and currently South East Queensland.

The application of vibrant colours and texture brings a structure-like quality to the artist’s work, embodying her love of nature and the environment. She successfully synthesizes both concept and colour to create clear and clean work that instils pop culture and fashion elements. Gencer’s paintings are held in corporate and private collections throughout Turkey, USA, Europe and Australia, appealing to both the corporate and domestic markets.

“I find incredible comfort in my connotation of the world landscape. I am interested in the environment and the way we view and experience it. Starting from the stunning views of cities as the new is built up around the old and by the way nature weaves through our urban and rural landscapes. Devoid of human presence my paintings enable the viewer to become the missing person within the work and experience the artwork through the complexities of the bold colours and textured patterns as you move through the landscape.”
