Pamela Gough

Biography

Pamela Gough's contemporary landscapes are narratives featuring character houses embedded with stories and symbols. Inspired by patterns in the landscape; her celtic origins and a passion for preserving colonial architecture, these textured works, scratch at the surface of life to reveal the spirit of a place, especially in her own backyard of Brisbane, Queensland. Often embedded with the illustrative detail of historical maps, her works make connection to the past and look for direction in the everyday map of life. From the whimsical houses dancing on ridges to the texture of corrugated roofs and fence palings and with the ever present calming colour blue, her works celebrate life and spirit and invite the viewer to take a deeper look at what they see beneath the surface in their own backyard.

“The very things that stir us and move us to action, make us unique, authentic.
Life's nurturing, education, community and experiences challenge us,
but give us our grounding, a sense of place within ourselves.
Where do we feel, at home?  Is it a mountain view, a walking path, the beach, Mozart,
a good book, old houses, rock climbing, driving into my own street, my town ...
The journey or complexity of life may draw us away from that special place of comfort.
Ethereal knowledge that the spirits once close to you, are still living in the environment, beckon you to return.
Colour, Texture, historical cartography, Houses, symbolism and
considered brushstrokes and scratchings give way to the story.”
